Aimee Determann (United Kingdom)
University of Westminster, London, Fashion Design BA 2017
Title of graduation collection: EDITION 1.0
Playing with the notion of anti-fashion, Aimee Determann’s menswear collection is inspired by purely functional garments. Silhouettes are developed from factory ‘over-clothes’, chemical ‘coveralls’ and flotation devices, celebrating and elevating the simple beauty of utilitarian clothing.
Many pieces are created from layers of Tyvek (a strong but lightweight industrial material made from high density polythene fibres) and transparent rip-stop nylon. Aimee Determann’s meticulous attention to detail includes modular elements linked together with a ‘Dutch rope’ system and prints illustrating how to wear the clothes, which are specific to each piece.
Through deconstructing safety workwear, the collection explores the functional and emotional role of clothing by inviting us to question how much of the design is really necessary.
