Parsons the New School for Design, New York Fashion Design and Society MFA 2016 | Central Saint Martins, London, Fashion Womenswear BA 2012
Liya Liu’s graduation collection aims to un-define the boundary between fashion and waste. She transformed forms and textures, taken from typical trash bags found in the streets of New York, into wearable garments. Consequently, the wearer is camouflaged and merged into urban landscape. The idea of sustainability is also reflected in materials and practice throughout Liya Liu’s collection. Materials used include gathered daily scraps like paper and laundry tags, and excess cuts are re-applied as embroidery parts, thus further challenging our perception of what is fashion and what is trash.
